Jaspan Schlesinger LLP Partner Jessica M. Baquet was named one of the “Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business” by Long Island Business News. Launched in 2000, the award recognizes Long Island’s top women in business, education, government and the nonprofit sector for their business savvy, influential work, mentoring and community involvement. An awards gala dinner was held on October 18, 2018 at the Crest Hollow Country Club.
A partner in the firm’s Litigation, Appellate, Labor and Employment and Trusts and Estates Practice Groups, Ms. Baquet focuses her practice in the areas of employment law, commercial and business litigation and contested Surrogate’s Court proceedings. Her employment law practice involves the defense of employers against claims of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wage and hour violations. In addition to litigating on their behalf, she routinely counsels employers regarding policy, procedure and compliance issues.
In her commercial practice, Ms. Baquet represents businesses and individuals in all phases of litigation involving contractual disputes, partnership disputes, insurance coverage litigation, fraud claims, breaches of restrictive covenants and unfair competition claims.
At a time when female attorneys are underrepresented among trial lawyers, Ms. Baquet has acted as lead counsel in several trials, including one that resulted in a landmark verdict in an elder abuse case and another that culminated in a damage award exceeding $7 million in favor of Ms. Baquet’s clients.
Ms. Baquet has been named to the New York Metro Area Super Lawyers Rising Stars every year from 2014-2018. She also received Hofstra University School of Law’s 2016 Outstanding Women in Law award. She is a sought-after writer on various legal topics and has also published in a variety of recognized professional publications. She is a member of the New York Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association and the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association.
Ms. Baquet holds a B.A. from New York University and a J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law.
