Stanley Harwood is of counsel to the Firm's Appellate and Litigation Practice Groups. He was a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court from 1982 through 1992. From 1987 through 1992, he served as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division for the Second Judicial Department, having been appointed to that Court by Governor Mario Cuomo on January 28, 1987. Prior to his judicial service, Justice Harwood served the public in various capacities. He was Law Secretary to a Supreme Court Justice. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, where he served as a ranking member of the Assembly Education Committee. Thereafter, he served as a counsel to the Minority Leader and then to the Speaker of the State Assembly. He also served as Chairman of the Nassau Democratic County Committee and Commissioner of Elections in Nassau County. Justice Harwood practiced law for 27 years before his election to the bench, and was a name partner in a Long Island law firm. Upon his resignation from the Appellate Division in November 1992, he joined a major New York City law firm as a partner where he was engaged in commercial litigation and appellate practice. Justice Harwood is a graduate of Columbia College
and Columbia University School of Law. He is an active member of the
Bar Association of Nassau County and the New York State Bar Association.
Justice Harwood served as a member of the Jury Project having
been appointed to that body by Chief Judge Judith Kaye. He served as
a member of the Judicial Advisory Council in Nassau County and as a
member of the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Bar Association.
