Joanne L. Oweis is an associate in the Firm's Litigation Practice Group.
Ms. Oweis received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University
of New York at Albany in 1992 and her Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law
School in 1999. During law school, she received the Lisle Academic
Scholarship and was a member of the Trial Advocacy Team of the Moot
Court Honor Society. In addition, she interned for the Honorable Wilkes
C. Robinson of the United States Court of Federal Claims, the Office
of the District Attorney New York County, and participated in a year
long litigation clinic with BLS Legal Services where she litigated
cases involving employment discrimination, claims for disability benefits
and other civil rights matters.
After completing law school, Ms. Oweis was an associate at a large New
York City firm where she was actively involved in all phases of litigation
and class actions involving contract disputes, business torts, insurance
and reinsurance, products liability, professional malpractice and white-collar
crime. In addition, she participated in an externship program at South
Brooklyn Legal Services representing low-income clients in housing court
matters and disputes regarding government benefits.
Prior to joining the Firm, Ms. Oweis was a Deputy County Attorney for
the Office of the Nassau County Attorney where she represented Nassau
County in various matters including civil rights, §1983 and constitutional
issues, employment discrimination, contracts, business torts, construction,
education, mental health and election law.
Ms. Oweis is admitted to practice law in the State Courts of New York
and the United States District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts
of New York. She is also member of the New York State and Nassau
County Bar Associations.
